Maria Serralvo (Barcelona, 1998) is a doctoral student at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Her films dialogue with her research to explore fabulation as a tool to reimagine gender, space, memory and identity in contemporary non-fiction cinema. 

 

She graduated in Audiovisual Communication at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and did an exchange year at the University of California, Berkeley, where she directed her first student short film, What We All Lack (2022, premiered at PIFF Los Angeles and awarded Best Experimental Film at the Paris Film Art Festival). She was also the head of production of the documentary feature Alexina B. Vides en composició (Alexis Borràs, 2024), premiered at the 28th Festival de Málaga and selected at the 28th DocsBarcelona International Documentary Film Festival. 

 

In 2024, she was awarded the La Caixa Foundation Fellowship for Postgraduate Studies Abroad to pursue a Master’s in Cinema at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Her master’s thesis, Poétique et politique du faux. Le cinéma documentaire et la fabulation draws from the Deleuzian notion of fabulation to explore how fiction can enter documentary film as both an ethical and aesthetic resource, capable of challenging the dichotomies between fiction and documentary, person and character, filmmaker and subject, reality and imagination. Her latest short film, Brea, 18-20 (2025), explores these questions through creation and was premiered at D’A Festival de Cinema de Barcelona.
